This is a club for Shakespeare enthusiasts who will meet once a week to read, study, ponder and delight in a play by Shakespeare. While students generally believe that Shakespeare is too difficult to understand and imagine that his language is obscure and outdated, club participants are always pleasantly surprised to find that Shakespeare speaks to them in a vivid, modern and extremely expressive way. The play chosen for this year is Julius Caesar, a work that continues the themes of Shakespeare’s historical plays:. statecraft, the nature of good kingship and the ethics of power. The play would have been of particular interest to the Elizabethans as they shared with the Romans the fear of civil war resulting from the will to autocratic power so that they would have seen the play not only as a history of the past but also as a story of their own time. We, too, as modern readers, will readily perceive the play’s relevance to the present day.
