The Bard is back! After the Covid upheaval, the Shakespeare course is once again being offered in its original 15-meeting format in which course participants meet once a week to read, study, ponder and delight in a play by the greatest of playwrights. While people generally hesitate to approach Shakespeare in the belief that his language is too difficult, obscure and outdated, course participants are always pleasantly surprised to find that Shakespeare speaks to them in a vivid, modern and extremely powerful way. This year, we will go back to a ‘historical’ play, Richard III, with its seductive and vicious anti-hero in one of Shakespeare’s darkest and bloodiest tragedies. Essentially a political thriller full of suspense and amazing plot twists, the play treats the themes of the lust for power and its attendant evils – corruption, duplicity, violence, murder – which makes it particularly and uncannily relevant to the current turbulent political scene. Course participants are asked to come to class with a copy of the original play with an Italian translation opposite. Any edition is suitable, as it is better to have different translations in order to have different interpretations. In addition to reading the play we will view several film versions of it. Join us and do not miss an opportunity to experience of the greatest of universal writers!
